CES 2018: A French affair

Las Vegas was buzzing once again for the 2018 edition of the Consumer Electronics Show, and as in years past, the annual conference showcasing the best of innovation had a distinctly French feel.

Of the 800 companies present at Eureka Park, the venue dedicated to young and innovative companies, over 270 hailed from France. It would have been difficult to miss the tricolored delegation and its red rooster. In fact, for the third year in a row, France was the second most represented country, just barely trailing the U.S and their 280 startups.

French Tech Pavilion

For the fifth consecutive year, Business France organized the French Tech pavilion where thirty-five innovative hardware startups were showcased. The companies, who were handpicked by successful entrepreneurs and investors, operate in many facets of the consumer tech space, ranging from the smart home and appliance sectors to the robotics and wearables.

Here are a few examples of the selected companies:

Thanks to its ability to amplify light, Unistellar’s eVscope is 100 times more powerful than a conventional backyard telescope. Hap2U’s haptic technology enriches customer experiences by allowing screens that display an object, a button or a surface to restitute the feeling of touch. Connect any smart device to several Bluetooth speakers, headsets or ear pods simultaneously thanks to Tempow’s technology. Caveasy created a smart wine cellar, enabling connoisseurs to monitor the parameters (humidity, temperature) of their bottles. Finally, Lancey Energy Storage were rewarded with a prestigious Best of Innovation award after they built the first electric space heater with an integrated battery, resulting in significant savings for users.

Demo Day in collaboration with Target

For some of the startups present on our pavilion, the CES adventure did not end in Las Vegas. In collaboration with our partners at  Target Open House in San Francisco, we organized a demo day where nine startups had the chance to pitch in front of an audience composed of investors, early adopters and merchants.

The companies that demoed to an enthusiastic audience were:

  •         Blue Frog Robotics: Their team has developed Buddy to assist family members in their daily lives. Buddy can monitor a house, interact with home-connected devices, play learning games and childhood favorites like “Hide and Seek”. Blue Frog Robotics won a Best of Innovation award in the robotics category at this year’s CES.
  •         Camtoy: Laïka by Camtoy is a smart, autonomous and mobile robot companion for your dog. It is equipped with a camera, a microphone and a speaker to interact with your pet and even with a treat dispenser.
  •         Catspad: A smart feeder and water dispenser designed to help cat owners improve their cat’s health. Using the Catspad collar or veterinarian microchip, this cat assistant allows you to manage and monitor eating habits of your cats with your smartphone.
  •         Jagger & Lewis: After 3 days of observation their smart dog device can understand your dog’s behavior, evaluate if he’s sleeping well, detect all abnormal behaviors and trigger alerts.
  •         Lovebox: A network of tangible communication devices dedicated to positive emotions. Their first product, the Lovebox, is a modern-day love note messenger.
  •         Plume Labs: Their first product, Flow, is a mobile smart air quality tracker that measures the most harmful pollutants. They are alumni of Impact’s 2017 edition and won an innovation award in the tech for a better world category at last year’s CES.

  •         Prynt: Their team has reimagined how we share digital content in the physical world, with the first-ever device to transform your smartphone into an instant camera.

  • Team 8: A connectable watch for kids. Users can create and manage their own super-hero. They can use it in many games and, by connecting 2 watches together they can oppose their hero against their friends’.

See you in 2019, CES!

As France’s presence continues to grow year after year, we are already looking forward to 2019 – this time with an eye on the #1 spot!
